Vascular Surgery

Introduction

The body's organs and tissues rely on blood circulation for oxygen and nutrient supply while removing waste products. Vascular surgery is a specialized field that treats diseases of arteries and veins.

Historically, the incidence of vascular diseases in Korea was relatively low compared to Western countries. However, since the 1980s, this rate has been increasing, and vascular diseases are now comparable to heart diseases, primarily due to changes in dietary habits.

Vascular surgery involves diagnosing, treating, and researching diseases of arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels throughout the body, excluding the cranial and cardiac vascular systems.

Common arterial diseases treated include arterial occlusion due to atherosclerosis and aneurysms, while prevalent venous diseases include varicose veins and venous thrombosis.

We diagnose and treat vascular diseases through smooth collaboration with the Department of Radiology, reducing mortality and complication rates before and after surgery while employing various interventional radiology techniques.

Common conditions addressed include abdominal aortic stenosis or aneurysms, occlusions or stenoses of mesenteric or lower limb arteries, Buerger's disease, carotid stenosis potentially leading to strokes, and vascular inflammation. Venous diseases include deep vein thrombosis, chronic venous insufficiency, and venous ulcers.
