What is Robotic Surgery?
When the patient is diagnosed with the need for the surgery, among various surgical methods, minimal invasive robotic surgery could be an ideal option for the patient. Robotic surgery is a type of laparoscopic/endoscopic surgical procedure where advanced surgical instruments (a combination of robotics and surgical technology) are attached to the patient and fully operated remotely. Therefore, robotic surgery can be performed with only a few small incisions, utilizing minature surgical instruments inserted into the body, enabling safer, more precise and accurate surgical procedures.
Characteristics of Robotic Surgery
· Provides an expanded(15x) video feed through a high-resolution 3D imaging system to ensure a clear surgical view
· Controls movement using small surgical instruments with wrist functionality
· Less restrictive regarding spatial movement, which is typically challenging in conventional laparoscopic surgery
· Provides surgeons with better visibility and precise control during the procedure
Advantages of Robotic Surgery
Compared to conventional laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery provides
· Less bleeding
· Less damage to nerves and blood vessls
· Smaller wounds due to minimal invasiveness
· Quick recovery, shortened hospitalization periods and easier return to daily life
Disadvantages of Robotic Surgery
· Requires addtional time for robot setup and removal
· Higher cost compared to conventional surgery
Introduction of Robotic Surgery Center
Life crisis experiences during illnes and its treatment, surgery can cause both patient and their families to encounter vague fears and significant stress regarding uncertainty about the future and changes in quality of life. Especially, patients undergoing surgery often worry about the well-being of themselves and their families. They may experience anxiety due to physical changes resulting from surgery, such as surgical scars, which can lead to a difficult transtion back to their daily lives.
Modern medicine has produced intelligent, precise and sophisticated medical devices through extensive research and effort, combining knowledge with advanced science. A prime example of this technology is the robotic surgery equipment. The robotic surgery equipment that are currently operating at Inha University Hospital is the "da Vinci", which is well recognized for its safety, accuracy and precision worldwide. It includes the latest "Xi" model and as for the first time in Incheon, we are operating single-port robotic system "SP" model during surgeries. Depending on the patient's condtion, the robotic system provides a 3D high-resolution imaging system that magnifies the surgical area (up to 15 times), ensuring excellent visibility during surgery. It allows for safe and precise operations through the robot's ability to perform delicate and intricate movements. Additionally, since it utilizes minimally invasive techniques rather than large incisions, stress associated with surgical scars after the patient's dischrge is minimized.
Inha University Hospital's Robotic Surgery Center has signed an MOU with Intuivie Surgical, the developer of the "da Vinci" system. Our center is supported by faculties who have successfully completed internationally accredited robotic surgery training programs, along with dedicated robotic surgery nurses and specialized coordinators all involved in stages of the patient's journey from consultation for sugery to discharge. We are committed to provide differentiated medical services to facilitate rapid recovery and assist patients return to their daily lives.
