Introduction
The Department of Hematology/Oncology is staffed by specialists who have completed internal medicine training and received advanced education in hematology and oncology. This department focuses on diagnosing and treating various blood disorders and cancers while engaging in research and education.
The oncology section specializes in the medical treatment of cancers such as gastric, colorectal, lung, liver, breast, head and neck, biliary, urological, brain tumors, and gynecological cancers.
The hematology section manages acute and chronic leukemias, myelodysplastic syndromes, lymphomas, and multiple myeloma, administering chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplants. It also handles various blood disorders, including anemias, thrombosis, and bleeding disorders.
Chemotherapy, a primary function of the oncology department, has significant side effects, particularly bone marrow suppression, making it essential to integrate hematology knowledge for effective oncology treatment.
At Inha University Hospital, the hematology and oncology divisions are combined, unlike most other institutions where they are separate. This integration enhances education and research, allowing for comprehensive patient care with a broader range of diagnostic and therapeutic options.
The faculty in the Hematology/Oncology department are experts in both fields and proficient in a wide range of procedures, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and stem cell transplants, making it a central part of the cancer center.
